Mechanical drama haults Pittard’s Nordschlife Charge!

VLN8 was another case of what could have been for David Pittard after showing his continued impressive form!

Paired back with Rudi Adams and Andreas Zigler, Pittard looked to continue his run of great form in a GT3 car around the Nurburgring Nordschlife with Walkenhorst Motorsport and their BMW M6 GT3 car.

Beautiful warm weather greeted the 450+ drivers for the weekend at the beginning of October, as practice took place on an amazing Autum evening. The team tried various set up changes during testing to combat the handleing issues that the car has had for the past 2 meetings and found a better balance that should look after the tyres better over a stint.

A damp morning greeted the drivers after overnight dew settled on the circuit making it a very tricky qualifying session, with most drivers best laps being set with a Code60 slow zone. Even with these conditions David managed to qualify the #36 Total M6 GT3 in 3rd overall and 1st in the Pro-Am class, a fantastic start to the day.

With Zigler taking the start, the car slipped outside the top 12 and over 60secs down on the leaders before David jumped in. David set off to regain the time lost and in 2 laps had caught and passed the #5 Phoniex Audi R8 before 1/2  lap later a rear steering arm failed, meaning an unscheduled pitstop to replace the part. The Walkenhorst team did a great job to replace the part only dropping 1 lap, however any chance of a good result was off the cards. Afterwards David duly set the fastest stint time for the time he was on track, again showing his pace and consistency around the Nordschlife with the M6 GT3 car.

David would hand the #36 car over to Adams to finish, who put in a solid final stint to bring the car back to P11 overall.

“Apart from the end result, again I’m very pleased with my performance. I’ve improved again after making a few mistakes with the tyres in the past few meetings, to run fastest of everyone on track showing what could have been. When everything comes together we will have a great result. I have proved I have all the elements to be fast at the Nordschlife, just not all in the same race, when it clicks it will be great!”

“This weekend sets the scene for 2019” Big weekend ahead for Pittard at the Nurbrugring

David Pittard will return to the Nurburgring for VLN8 this weekend in October (The same weekend as in 2017 where he wasn’t driving), to face the 2019 competition!

With the 2018 European season coming to an end, both Audi and Aston Martin will debut their 2019 GT3 cars at VLN8 with a host of other manufacturer drivers making it a big weekend for David as he looks to continue his recent run of incredible form at the world’s most challenging race circuit.

Walkenhorst motorsport will be trying for their 3rd pole position in a row having topped the times previously at VLN6 & VLN7 with both Total and Playstation supported cars.

Having already proved his pace, ability and consistency against Porsche who debuted their 2019 911 GT3 R at the previous 2 VLN races at the hands of works drivers, David will continue to push against the 2 new manufactures and their works talent back at the Ring.

“It’s great to see such a healthy SP9 entry list. Now that there are less clashes with other European championships, the drivers and teams are back at the Ring starting their preparations for 2019, including the 2019 Nurburgring 24hrs. While they have been away I have been pushing hard to learn the circuit and I have had some great results, so I hope to continue that run of form against them this weekend as well!”

Fastest lap at VLN7 for Pittard as his pace continues to impress

Nurburgring newbie David Pittard, is quickly becoming a Nurburgring specialist having added another accolade to his racing CV by setting the 5th fastest qualifying time ever on the VLN layout of the Nurburgring Nordschlife as well as setting the fastest lap during VLN7.

Having set the pace in VLN6, the pressure was on Pittard to recreate that fantastic pace again at VLN7. Although Pittard was assigned 09:20-09:40 slot within qualifying, not the ideal time of qualifying, he went almost 2.5secs faster than his VLN6 pole position time to take provisional pole on a 7:55.761! However by the end of the 90min session, Pittard ended the session a mear 0.293 seconds off pole in P4 after a super fast and super close qualifying session.

“I wanted to make the most of my qualifying slot, the pressure was off because I didn’t have the final empty track slot and after a busy GP circuit at the beginning of the lap, I saw it was clear so pushed on. I had a relatively clear lap, still having to pass 15 cars, and dropping 2.5secs in sector4 but hooked the rest of it up improving from VLN6 and went even quicker! I held pole position for 25mins before being pipped to a second pole in a row. I was disappointed not to have had the final slot and hook up a really clear lap, however the data shows my pace on a great lap!”

With AM driver Andreas Zigler starting the car, the #36 Total car dropped to just outside the top10 after the first stint before David jumped in. An unusually clear full stint with no Code-60s or 120s, meant 100% pushing from David to make up time and he set the fastest lap of the race on his second tour. His pace slowly dropped off due to deteriorating tyres again, before the end of his stint.

“The car has been super strong all day again, a big thanks to the hard work the team have put in to make it this quick, as the track was clear I could push all the way through my stint to make up time. Setting the fastest lap was really good to add to my CV as well as I felt denied of pole position!”

Blancpain driver Anders Buchardt took over in the 3rd stint, before Zigler bought the car home P9 overall and P4 in class.

David returns to the Nurburgring in 2weeks time for VLN8.

Pittard looking to maintain strong pace at VLN7

Pole sitter from VLN6, David Pittard will be looking to maintain his impressive form at the 7th VLN round of the year back at the 25km long Nurburgring Nordschlife aboard the Total Racing Walkenhorst BMW M6 GT3 car.

The 26year old, duly set the fastest time for qualifying on only his 3rd outing in a GT3 car in his debut year racing at the “Green Hell”, as he targets a manufacture GT3 drive.

“Last weekend started brilliantly. I achieved my aims to producing a sub 8min lap around the VLN layout of the Nurburgring, it just happened to be quicker than everyone else’s time! I knew that I had the potential to do this at some point this year, however its a huge confidence boost to have done it so early in my debut VLN season. My aim now is to work on the areas I can still improve and maintain this pace for the remaining 3 races of the VLN season”

Pittard will pair with season partner Andreas Zigler & Blancpain driver Anders Buchardt in the SP9-PRE Pro-Am class and look for another podium finish after 2 DNF’s in a row due to technical faults.

“This weekend will be mixed conditions by the looks. It means I will get to try the Nordschlife in the wet for the first time in testing which will be very useful as I’m yet to drive the track in the wet. However I hope that the track will be dry for qualifying where I can try to work on the area’s of improvement and go Sub 8 again”

Pittard claims outright pole at the Nurburgring in only 3rd GT3 outing


Walkenhorst Motorsport driver David Pittard claimed his maiden VLN pole position and the teams first in 2years for VLN6 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife aboard the teams Total Lubricants supported BMW M6 GT3 car.

In the 26year olds 3rd outing in a GT3 car at the menacing 25km Nurburgring, he topped the time sheets ahead of many established manufacture drivers and factory supported teams in his BMW M6 GT3 Car in the final 10mins of qualifying to set the grid for the 4hour race.

David, having proved his pace and potential at VLN4, his first ever time in a GT3 car, was given the opportunity to qualify the Car in the final 10mins of the session and duly delivered on his 1st of 2 laps to achieve his aim of going sub 8, as well as going P1 by 3tenths!

“A lot of time, effort and prep has gone into that lap. I’m hugely thankful that Walkenhorst trusted me to qualify the car and I was prepared enough to make the most of the clear track at the end of the session and deliver the time. All I wanted to do was go Sub8 and was over the moon to achieve it, but when the team said it was p1 I didn’t believe them! Even on the inlap I was speechless!”

“There are a lot of drivers that I look upto and aspire to be on the VLN entry, and to have them in my rear view mirror on the grid was a strange but amazing feeling! This is why we came to the VLN to be compared to the best GT drivers in the world on the hardest track on the world, to prove my ability, which I have already. A huge thank you to everyone that has helped give me this opportunity!”

David would start the race running in the top 4, with Nurburgring specialists Falken Motorsports and 2017 N24hr winners Land Motorsport. However qualifying would be the highlight of the day, as an engine issue would halt the car out on track after 10laps while David was running P4.

Return to (The Green) Hell for Pittard and Walkenhorst

David Pittard will return back to the legendary Nurburgring Nordschleife aboard his usual #36 Total Lubricants supported PRO-AM car with co-drivers Rudi Adams and Andreas Zigler!

VLN6 will return to the VLN’s usual format of a 4hour race where the Walkenhorst team will hope to have a turn of fortunes compared to VLN5 where the #35 Playstation car didn’t start and the #36 Total car crashed after 2hrs 20mins of the 6hr VLN5 race.

“The team have done a fantastic job to even get the cars ready in the 14day turn around between the 2 events. So it would be great to reward them with a result this weekend for all their hardwork and effort they put in at VLN5 and between the 2 events.

I can’t wait to get back out properly! At VLN5 I only had my qualifying lap to try and improve on my previous performance, and even that was seriously affected by slow zones, but the data proved to me that I’ve made a big step forward since VLN4. I now want to have a clean run at a whole event to improve on the finer details”

Podium for Pittard at Chevron 50th Anniversary at the Oulton Park Gold Cup

David returned to the Oulton Park Gold Cup to take a memorable podium in the Chevron B8 50th anniversary race.

Pittard was asked to drive the B8 by owner and regular racer Bristol based David Smithies in the iconic event celebrating the largest model built by the British manufacture in 1968.

The Chevron B8 remains one of the most enduringly popular sports-racing car designs and was one of the most successful projects from talented designer and engineer Derek Bennett, the founder of Chevron.

The cars were built in a former mill in Bolton and were regularly tested and raced at Oulton Park. Over the ensuing half century, the B8 has claimed many victories at the Cheshire track, which is the perfect setting to celebrate this classic design.

A small teething issue limited running in the mixed condition qualifying session on August Bank Holiday Monday at the picturesque Cheshire track, however in the drying conditions, David’s best lap from only 3laps in qualifying placed him P4 on the grid for the 40min pitstop race.

Engineer for the weekend Chris Bailey and Smithies quickly diagnosed the small wiring issue meaning the car was ready again for the race. A rare opportunity of a standing start saw David hold his position going into turn 1, before moving upto 3rd by the end of lap1.

David then quickly chased down and passed 2nd place after 3laps again into the final corner before going after the leader! However David & his BMW powered Chevron didn’t have the pace to catch the FVA engined Chevron of Ex GT racer Andrew Kirkaldy, and even after a super slick pitstop, gaining 4secs on the leader it wasn’t enough to challenge for the lead. A late race safety car bunched the pack up again negating the 15+second lead David had over P3, at the restart, a 2 lap dash for the cash, David hasselled Kirkaldy without finding a way through and on the last lap missed a shift and dropped to P3.

“With the car being rebuilt over the winter, our aim coming into the event was to finish and anything else was a bonus. We were reminded of this with the small issue in qualifying, however it was clear that the car had great pace! So to come away dissapointed with a P3 result shows how competitive the car was and I’m kicking myself for my error on that last lap! It was a great honour to have been asked to race for David and can’t thank him enough for the opportunity! It was great to race such an classic car around such a classic circuit with so much history around the event!”

Pittard returns to the Oulton Park Gold Cup for Chevron 50th Anniversary race

David Pittard will take a break from his BMW M6 GT3 VLN campaign to contest the Chevron B8/B6 50th Anniversary race on August bank holiday weekend at the annual Oulton Park Gold Cup.

David, who raced to considerable success with a Chevron B8 in the Master FIA Historic Sportscar championship in 2017, has been asked by fellow B8 competitor and owner David Smithies to contest his car at the one off event!

The event will bring together a large amount of the iconic 1970’s sportscar’s around the picturesque and undulating International Oulton Park circuit in Cheshire, in a celebration of one of the most successful models Chevron produced. The event will take place on the August Bank Holiday Monday, with a 30min Qualifying & 50min pitstop race.

“It is a real honour to have been asked by David to drive his car in such a prestigious race! So firstly, a huge thank you to him. Having raced against him in the Master series in 2017, he said he was impressed with my pace as well as ability to bring the car back with minimumal wear and tear to it, which is great feedback for me to hear. I want to repay his faith in me with a win and crown his car as the winner of the 50th anniversary race! I love Oulton’s old school nature so to race the circuit in a 1970’s Chevron will be like stepping back in time! Tally ho!”

Nightmare weekend for Pittard at the Green Hell

After a very promising start to “Race week” David’s plan’s slwoly unravelled through various issues out of his control!

It was announced early last week that David would graduate from the Walkenhorst #36 Total sponsored Pro-Am car to the #35 Playstation sponsored Pro car for the blue ribbon VLN championship event of the year the ROWE 6hrs.

However the weekend didn’t start well when a technical issue with the #35 Playstation car ruled it out for the weekend, leaving 4 refuged drivers. David was very luckily transfered back to the #36 Total car to race with previous team mates Andreas Zigler & Rudi Adams. This would guarantee additional mileage in the BMW M6GT3 car around the Nordschlife which is very sought after and therefore extremely beneficial.

Mixed track conditions hampered running for David during Friday testing for his 2 laps practice, however a team effort managed to set the car up very well by the time qualifying came on Saturday morning.

“A big thanks to Henry Walkenhorst for re-arranging the teams to get me out on track. It could have been a very short weekend. However with the team being so versatile and having settled into the very welcoming atmosphere in the previous 2 races, it was easy to jump back in with Andreas, Rudi & Blancpain regular Ralf Oeverhaus”

David joined qualifying in peak time between 08:45-09:00 which meant his lap was heavily affected by traffic and Code 120 & 60 zones meaning completing just 1 lap was the target to qualify for the race. However Adams at the end of the session set the 5th fastest time setting the #36 car up for a strong result for the 6hr race!

The #36 car would run in the top 10 for the first 2 1/2 hours of the race at the hands of Adams & Oeverhaus, however just before the driver change to hand over to David, Oeverhaus had contact with the barrier putting the car out of the race.

“The weekend just kept getting worse and worse really due to factors outside my control which was a great shame. I can be thankful that I got any laps this weekend thanks to the team, which some of my team mates didn’t and I can be thankful that this has only happened an extremely small amount of times during my career! Its also only 2 weeks to wait until the next VLN meaning I don’t have to wait long to get back behind the wheel of the awesome BMW Motorsport M6 GT3 car! It can only get better, roll on VLN6!”

Pittard’s Pro Promotion for the Rowe Oil 6hrs of Nurburgring

David Pittard’s rapid rise through the VLN ranks continues has Walkenhorst Motorsport have placed him in the teams Pro category car for the 6hrs of VLN5.

David started his Green Hell journey at VLN2 in the slowest but one of the most hotly contested classes, the V4 class in a production spec BMW 325i, a top 5 was on the cards before a wheel hub fault cost them at the final pitstop, David then showed great pace in the also hotly contested BMW M235i CUP5 class with Walkenhorst to finish P4, before then making his GT3 debut in the BMW M6 GT3 with a podium in the Pro-AM class!

These impressive results at one of the hardest championships and circuits in the world have earned him the chance to share the Playstation backed BMW M6 GT3 in the Pro class for the VLN championship’s blue ribbon event! David will share the car with regulars Playstation Academy winner Jordan Tresson, Blancpain GT Asia champion Hunter Abbott & 2018 Spa 24hr winner Christian Krognes.

“I was over the moon when I received the email from Walkenhorst team manager Nic. All my preparation for VLN5 had been to maximise the Pro-AM entry that I had competed with at VLN4, however I’m pleased to have been entrusted with the Pro class car with 3 other top class drivers fighting for overall honours! This has been what I have been working towards, a shot to prove myself directly against some of the best GT drivers in the world! Let’s get it!”
